White Mushrooms

White Mushrooms

I made it to West Virginia! And it's beautiful! In a within limits kind of way...

Overnight soaked porridge was better today but still work is required. It saves loads of time though, I awoke around 7.30 and was on the road by 8.20. I had about 25 miles to the next town and second breakfast and managed to squeeze in some crisps and a chocolate milk on the way. This was not to be a healthy food day...

What a turn around...

What a turn around.

About 15 minutes after doing my last blog update and leaving The Swinging Bridge at Paint Bank I pass an unexpected campground and think I might as well have a look. It's mostly empty, right beside a river and free. No brainer. It was only about 4pm and i'd only done about 15 miles but hey, I'm on holiday right?

Rainy Sunday...

It started raining in the middle of the night so I had to get up and put the flysheet on the tent. It's quite easy to do that badly and quite a job to do properly. Obviously I did it badly so the tent was a little leaky but fine.

It's 11.48am now and it's still raining. It doesn't seem to mean it anymore though so maybe it's stopping I've been thinking that for a few hours now but to no avail.

I made the most of the motel breakfast again - waffles, cereal, coffee, juice, bagel, donut and muffin. Got cleaned up and packed up and headed into town to take a few photos and buy some food before hitting the road again. I couldn't resist returning to The TExas Tavern for another Denver but the atmosphore wasn't the same as Thursday night, hardly surprising I suppose.

Burning Bridges

Had a day off yesterday and it was a bit weird. I had loads of stuff to do, mainly on the computer, sorting photos out, getting a route together etc and I hardly got any of it done because this computer is shit! You can't upgrade the memory and it's so slow it can hardly play mp3s without a battle. Grrr.

Anyways. I made it over the 7 lane highway to a 50s diner for lunch which was pretty good. I had my first biscuit. It's basically a light scone thing. Pretty tasty. I can't imagine it with gravy, I'll give it a go sometime when my veggie standards are at a low.

Sunflowers and Christmas Trees

Sunflowers and Christmas Trees

Well. That was a hard day. I did 75 miles including, nearly at the end, a 13 mile climb from the lowest point on the blue ridge parkway to the highest point on it, in Virginia. The climb was 3301 feet. I kept misremembering what happened at the top too. I drank so much water going up I decided to go to the next campsite which I thought was only about 5 miles after the top of the hill. More like 12 miles. Mostly down hill but I was pretty wrecked by then.

Love, Virginia.

So it's ten to 8pm and I'm in the woods. There was some thunder a while ago and it's just starting to rain, could be an interesting night...

It's been another good day. I met Dave's mate David and his dad, David for lunch in Waynesboro. There I saw my first trailer park and some of the signs of decay that I'd been told to expect; shops, gas stations and houses boarded up and abandoned. It was a nice enough town with a good outdoors store but, it seemed, no wi fi. How annoying.

What's the point of pretzels?

"Only "50 miles today but they were pretty hard goin. 47 amazing miles though. Unbelievably the views were more stunning than yesterday. The early morning mist made the same views better and then the views to the west just staggered. I don't think I even took photos as they wouldn't do justice.
